Julie Dowds, Consultant

Julie Dowds

Lead on youth health (inc. sexual health and mental health and wellbeing), research and evaluation and youth participation and involvement.

Julie Dowds is an experienced health promotion professional who has worked for Create since January 2006. As well as her expertise on youth health issues Julie takes the lead for research and evaluation. Recent projects include the evaluation of Text 4u, a review of youth health service provision in Glasgow City, an evaluation of emotional literacy training for Glasgow South East CHCP, a review into teaching on Hepatitis C in educational establishments and supporting a review of alcohol and health behaviour change resources. Each project has involved conducting focus groups and/or one to one qualitative interviews with the public and professionals across a number of different settings including hospitals, primary care, schools and prisons. In addition to research, Julie also supports training within Create and has delivered a number of courses including 'the delivery of sexual health education', 'introduction to substances', and 'sex, alcohol and risk taking behaviour'.

Prior to working with Create, Julie was employed as a health promotion officer for four years with Greater Glasgow NHS Board (as was) with responsibility for developing and supporting the establishment and evaluation of youth-appropriate health services. The work of the Health Promotion Department was delivered within a context of health inequalities and used a community engagement approach. This provided Julie with an excellent understanding of health inequalities and approaches to health improvement at a policy, community and individual level.

Julie successfully completed an MSc in Social Science Research with merit at Glasgow University in September 2007. Her research was a qualitative research study that used focus groups to explore young people’s perceptions and attitudes towards eating disorders. Julie also has experience as working as an advocate for a young people’s mental health charity and is currently a volunteer counsellor with ChildLine Scotland.
