Reviewing Health and Wellbeing Education in Schools

Susie and Julie recently delivered a morning session on Reviewing, Planning and Delivering Health and Wellbeing Education at the Scottish Council for Independent Schools "Health and Wellbeing" conference.

Health and Wellbeing education is becoming increasingly important in schools. We can support schools to plan and deliver effective education on a number of health related topics including Substance Misuse, Tobacco, Sexual Health and Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Alcohol Brief Interventions in Pharmacy

Niamh is just back from London where she (and nearly 100 others) attended the first ever conference on alcohol brief interventions in pharmacy at King’s College. An interesting day which further developed our knowledge of what works in terms of ABI in a pharmacy setting based on the experiences of a project in Lambeth. Create has a long history of work in this field in Wales, Glasgow and Grampian including implementing the first ever multisite trial of brief interventions in a pharmacy setting.

Niamh Fitzgerald recently attended this annual conference at which some very interesting presentations and discussions on brief interventions were held. Key topics included, how to implement brief interventions into mainstream practice, brief interventions in criminal justice, community pharmacy settings and antenatal settings. Niamh Fitzgerald is co-editor of the INEBRIA News Bulletin.

Niall Scott, Training and Development Officer

Create have recently employed a Training and Development Officer, Niall Scott, who will be based in Wigan leading the Mainstreaming IBA (Alcohol) Project.

Niall has worked in the area of substance use since 2003. This has mainly been in relation to mental health and offending behaviour. The different settings he has worked in include the probation service, a community drug team, a medium secure unit and community mental health services. Niall has worked in Greater Manchester, Kirklees, Staffordshire and Shropshire.

We are really excited to have Niall on board.

WIGAN - Mainstreaming Identification & Brief Advice (Alcohol) – NEW PROJECT

Create have recently been commissioned for the next 18 months to develop and roll-out a new and exciting brief intervention project across the Borough of Wigan in the North West of England. Working with a wide range of key partners and stakeholders Create will set out to embed and mainstream the provision of alcohol ‘identification and brief advice’ across key statutory and voluntary services.

Scottish Healthy Care Network

Create continue to support the development of the Scottish Health Care Network in Scotland. Steven McCluskey, Create Consultant was asked to present at the networks recent national network event & AGM in Edinburgh on the 3rd December 2009.

Respect Me – Anti-Bullying Conference

Respect Me, Scotland’s Anti-Bullying Charity recently held their 3rd annual conference in Glasgow. The event was attended by Susie who returned thoroughly enthused and keen to think about how our expertees at Create can support this work. Brief Interventions Conference - INEBRIA 2009

The International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol Problems (INEBRIA) held this year’s international conference in Newcastle/Gateshead earlier this year and Create staff were in attendance. The programme was wide and varied and included presentations from various leading alcohol researchers and policy makers both from the UK and internationally.

Scottish Journal of Residential Childcare (SJRCC) – Special Health Edition

The SJRCC is published jointly by the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and the Scottish Institute for Residential Childcare. Steven McCluskey, Create Consultant was very happy to be invited as guest editor for this special health edition of the Journal. Steven said “ The Journal provides an important forum for residential childcare staff and others to reflect on policy, practice and training and research within the context of their daily practice with young people.
